The game pits you against a giant ghost, and you need to crawl across the walls, colleting dots, then eventually power-up so you can jump at the ghost doing damage. The first is more maze running action, with a boss under the ground causing chaos, but the second is where it is at its best. But in Co-op it lets you jump to your partner, to free them when they are being captured by a ghost.īoss fights vary between two options. You get limited jumps, but in single player it returns you to your starting point, which is a lifesaver if you are trapped, or running out of time. The other real notable addition is the use of jump mechanic. The game gives a little room to breathe in these situations as not every hit is instant death, which is a strange departure from Pacman, but makes these scenarios easier. As the ghost gets longer and takes up more space, you can find yourself getting stuck in corners as the tail is covering your exit. This creates a weird Pacman fused with Snake vibe. The maze is littered with stationary ghosts you need to avoid, which add to a ghost’s tail. Once you complete an objective, the fruit pops up and eating it moves you to the next stage. But it’s everything else they do that not only uses elements of the old games but reuses them in a way that makes things different.įor instance, the fruit used to pop onto the maze for no reason but to give you extra points, now they are a portal. The general gist of Pacman is the same, you need to move around the map, eat the dots, don’t get caught by the ghosts. The sounds, the lights, and the pace does get the heart pumping, and it’s so much better than I could have expected. Pacman Championship Edition 2, for someone who hasn’t touched the series since the many originals, is an absolute fast paced, dot chomping energy fest. If so then the short answer is yes, and they have come a lot further than you might expect. There are also boss battles against giant ghosts that provide a spectacle, but just aren’t all that much fun.If you’re anything like me, when you see the title Pacman Championship Edition 2, your first thought is, they are still making Pacman games? The rules of how often you could tap an enemy without dying seemed murky because it’s based on an invisible timer between bumps, and that uncertainty added a level of randomness that hurts the original game’s fantastic binary precision. The chief example is the new ability to bounce off enemies a few times before they become aggro’d and kill you actively goes against one of the core tenets that Pac-Man has been built on for decades: one touch is lethal. This adds a really great layer of tension to the standard formula.īut for every cool addition, there are double the amount of new features that just feel like clutter. I also really liked the way that power pellets will actively run away from you, forcing you to chase the power-up while also avoiding the ghosts. There’s also the power gauge at the bottom of the screen that rewards you with fruit or power pellets, providing a nice micro-goal amidst the larger round. Not only did this save my life on a bunch of occasions, but it allowed me to create smart new strategies that shave seconds off a run in timed challenges. Some of the additions are genuinely great – for example, I love being able use a consumable jump power-up anywhere on the map to hop back to my starting place and get out of a precarious position. “However, while the original Championship Edition introduced just the right amount of new ideas to make it a Masterpiece, this follow-up stumbles in its excess by adding so many tweaks that it barely feels like Pac-Man anymore at times.
